Antonio’s passion and interests in writing, politics, the world order, international relations, culture, and travelling brought him to European Studies. As a fourth-year student, he could find an internship at HIG, where he could “enact a dream of his”: writing articles and researching contemporary geopolitical developments.

“I am beyond excited to work at HIG. I get to enact a dream of mine, where I can write articles and research relevant fields within my interests and gain experience!”

Antonio’s interests are writing poetry, reading, going on long walks with his dog, spending time with his friends and loved ones, listening to music, and photography. He has an outgoing character, apparent in his willingness to take part in political debates. He loves to discuss, for example, current affairs and how he imagines critical systems could be different; he has always had his mind on change.

“Ever since I was young, I’ve wanted to tear down the walls that dictate our daily lives. I want to change systems from within, allowing each person to dictate the trajectory of their lives without feeling lost or feeling lesser.”

Geopolitics is important to Antonio because the world is getting smaller, access to other geographic areas is increasing, influence is quickly spreading, and the geopolitical balance is constantly moving. The world order is shifting, the large actors are making their move, and “he’s there to witness and record it all”. It affects us all, and he believes we need to stay informed, strengthen our position on the world stage, and create a solid foothold. 

“A lot has changed in the world as I’ve got older. The safety I felt when I was younger has disappeared; all parties and threats spread fear, which looms over innocent people. The world order is fragmented, and I wish to pick up the pieces for the people.”

Antonio and HIG align for this reason. Both share the aim of strengthening the Netherlands’ and Europe’s position in the geopolitical theatre. Antonio’s personal aim is to find a trajectory through it all, one where everyone can benefit, where the future looks brighter, and we worry about being on time rather than running out of time. He wants to relieve his generation from the crushing pressure of constant international tension and impending wars.
