On 23 May 2024, Leiden University organised a heated debate entitled “The Mortality of Europe” in the run-up to the European elections. The event took place on the packed ‘Spanish Steps‘ in the Wijnhaven building on The Hague Campus.
Led by debate moderator Michel Don Michaloliákos, an open and critical debate took place on the most important (geo)political, economic and social challenges facing the EU. Nine candidates for the European Parliament from different political parties took part in the debate. The themes of the propositions varied: democratic legitimacy, European solidarity and migration, energy and climate policy, economic resilience and strategic autonomy were all discussed.
