Current affairs lecture: South Korea’s struggle for democracy

Antonio Gamelkoorn

In Summary

Since South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol declared a state of emergency in December 2024, which was followed by large protests and his suspension, South Korea has been in a deep political crisis. This crisis now also raises questions about illiberal tendencies worldwide and their impact on the Netherlands. What lessons can we learn from South Korea?

During the first Current Affairs Lecture* in The Hague, Prof. Remco Breuker spoke with chair Michel Don Michaloliákos about ‘Democracy under Pressure? Lessons from South Korea’. Click here for a summary.

What is a Current Affairs Lecture?

In a Current Affairs Lecture, an expert is given 20 minutes to share his or her views on a topical issue, after which the audience has almost an hour to ask questions. The Current Affairs Lecture is therefore characterised by a high degree of interaction and is ideal for people who enjoy engaging in conversation with experts and other interested parties.
